Subsidised connections

Making drinking water at home more accessible in rural areas

Réalisation d'un branchement social OMILAYE

The subsidised connection is a scheme designed to bring the drinking water service lastingly closer to households living in rural areas.

It forms part of a programme subsidised by the State of Benin and the World Bank, with the aim of enabling eligible rural populations to access drinking water at home, under service conditions that meet the expected quality standards.

Through this mechanism, households located in areas served by the multi-village Drinking Water Supply Systems — SAEPmV can access the service more easily, while benefiting from local support provided by OMILAYE.

A social scheme for rural households

The subsidised connection aims to lower the financial barriers that limit individual access to drinking water in rural areas.

The cost of the social utility connection is set at 10,000 CFA francs. The beneficiary household pays an initial co-payment of 3,000 CFA francs and then repays the remaining 7,000 CFA francs in monthly installments of 500 CFA francs over 14 months.

This social measure allows rural families to have a drinking water tap at home, with greater everyday convenience, fewer trips to fetch water and improved day-to-day living conditions.

The "One household, one tap" campaign

As part of delivering the subsidised connection scheme, OMILAYE regularly runs large-scale enrolment campaigns through the "One household, one tap" initiative.

This campaign informs, raises awareness among and supports the people of villages within the catchment of the SAEPmV systems, in order to make it easier for them to sign up to the service.

OMILAYE teams work in the field, alongside local authorities, community representatives and stakeholders, to explain how the programme works, register interested households and guide them through the connection process.

Access to drinking water with high quality standards

A subsidised connection is not a lower-quality service. It gives beneficiary households access to drinking water at home with the same standards of continuity, water quality, customer follow-up and operational support.

OMILAYE ensures the rural public drinking water service is run professionally, through infrastructure maintenance, network monitoring, customer management, complaint handling and control of the quality of the water distributed.

A lever for achieving SDG 6

The subsidised connection programme contributes directly to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all.

By making drinking water at home more accessible, this initiative helps improve public health, reduce the hardship of fetching water, strengthen household dignity and support the sustainable development of rural communities.

More than 10,000 households already benefiting

To date, more than 10,000 households already benefit from this social measure.

This result reflects the programme's tangible impact on rural populations and confirms the value of an approach built on proximity, solidarity, service performance and support for communities.

Through subsidised connections, OMILAYE continues its commitment: bringing drinking water closer to households and contributing to lasting improvements in rural living conditions.

OMILAYE — Water is life.
